Graduate careers at SCISYS

What will you be doing?

As a graduate software engineer (or undergraduate on a placement) you will be working on real work from the outset. You will be working in project teams alongside experienced colleagues and you will learn on the job, putting your studies to use but for a real business need that matters.

Our approach to graduate support and development

We recognise that to help you settle into your role and be able to contribute you will need support and access to development opportunities which are tailored to your individual needs. To enable this we have a series of measures in place. These include;

  • a ‘buddy’ who can show you the ropes. This will typically be a colleague who joined SCISYS as a graduate within the last 18 months;
  • access to experts in your particular technical area;
  • graduate networking and social events;
  • exposure to different role types and areas of our business;
  • appropriate training for your role delivered via courses or via access to our library and online courses;
  • personal skills training such as presentation skills, personal effectiveness, report writing;
  • the opportunity to participate in the National STEMNET Ambassador scheme to help inspire children in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths.

What we are looking for:

Ideally you will be on track for at least a 2.1 in a STEM related subject. You will have experience in coding in either Java or C++. More importantly you will be passionate about developing your skills and solving real problems.

To begin with you are most likely to be working in either our Bristol or Chippenham offices. You will need to be flexible to work in different locations as well as on customer sites if necessary.

What’s it like as a graduate working at SCISYS? What our graduates have to say...

“Working on real-world projects can be difficult and demanding especially for graduates who can feel like they’re not contributing anything. However, at SCISYS it is made a priority to get you involved and making tangible contributions. It is also understood that working on a real project may be nothing like you expect, or university has prepared you for. Working alongside new graduates, and with the help of an experienced mentor, you will be learning and contributing to your project practically from day one. You will be integrated into a project team where you will learn about the goals and objectives that the team is working towards. You will be given work that is based on your technical competency helping you move onto more complex problems.”
Simon H, Graduate Software Engineer

“Since joining SCISYS I have been working on a project applying Machine Learning Solutions to Aircraft Sensor Fusion. This has involved working on both back and front end software development, as well as time spent in a mathematical role. The thing I have really appreciated at SCISYS is the support for career development; there are regular employee reviews where this is discussed and contribution to the direction of the project is positively encouraged. The company is large enough that there are always new, interesting opportunities to get involved in but small enough that you feel looked after. Your career at SCISYS is really what you make of it, and the management team are really good at making sure you get the most out of it.”
Chris R, Applications Developer

“After leaving university I was aware that there would be a gap in my knowledge between what I’ve learnt and what is useful in the work place but SCISYS were understanding of this and provide brilliant support and guidance to help me expand my knowledge The working environment is friendly and supportive and I actually look forward to work which is something I never thought I would say. Since joining I have been working on several projects including the Warrior Capability Sustainment Program, Flexible Dc to Dc converter for an electric vehicle and the carbon reduction commitment. Being exposed to different projects allows you to gain a real insight into how different companies work and allows you to explore the different pressures that they all come with. I would recommend SCISYS to all graduates as there is space to really enrich your knowledge in different areas in a comfortable and friendly atmosphere.”
Dan H, Applications Developer
