The Space industry is going through a revolution in multiple areas suchas the costs to accessing orbit, mass production techniques being applied to satellite manufacture, use of satellite communications to enable Internet of Things and terabytes of Earth observation data being generated daily that entail classic big data opportunities. In all of these we are witnessing achange from the conventional institutional approach led by governments to commercial ventures. As we enter this renaissance of the sector, software and IT will play key roles in enabling and realising these visions as without these the cost efficiencies and automation cannot be realised.

About The Role
SCISYS is looking to cement its positon within the institutional market,as well as grow further into the commercial sector addressing both telecoms operators and operators of mega-constellations. A Solutions Architect will be recruited to provide direction and leadership within the Space division in all aspects of the ground segment with particular focus on developing new systems architecture and supporting development projects. The Division is therefore looking for an ambitious, innovative, technically driven and commercially aware engineer with a proven track record across the entire software development lifecycle. Candidates are expected to be able to support initial conversations with customers to help develop requirements and evolve solutions, lead formaldesign activities and provide technical oversight and leadership during projectdevelopment.
Key Responsibilities
  • Provide direction and leadership to all aspects of application architecture, infrastructure and application design
  • Take full ownership for the overall project system architecture and when required manage the work of an architecture team
  •   Select the appropriate design standards, methods and tools and ensure they are applied effectively
  • Identify the commercial impacts of changes in the analysis and implementation model and evaluate these in conjunction with project management.
  • Provide technical leadership and support to ensure that the development team are following the agreed technical architecture and development methodologies.
  • Provide technical management of software development programmes, including support to the project manager in defining the strategies needed to meet the delivery schedule and overseeing all activities performed in support of the development. 
  • Act as the key technical contact on projects through the analysis, design and development phases to ensure that the customer needs are met, and the expectations are managed.
  • Directly support customers in both pre-sales and consultancy roles to help establish their needs and establish initial solutions.
  • Lead and shape the technical solutions to be presented within proposals to customers.
  • Support the development and enhancement of SCISYS business processes by evaluating technologies, developing processes and supporting best-practice.
  • Actively contribute to the Division’s Technology Forum and support internal lunchtime seminars
  • Keep abreast of technologies and develop new techniques for use in systems architecture and design.

General

  • Able to provide expert advice in a digestible form to both the company and its customers.
  • Ability to estimate costs and implementation timescales associated with potential solutions.
  • Experience of leading and supporting technical teams and mentoring staff
  • Willingness to get directly involved in all aspects of a project to ensure that the overall objectives are met.

Engineering

  • Demonstrable experience of the requirements management process from initial development through testing and verification.
  • Proven track record of designing, estimating and implementing large-scale enterprise level applications and/or mission critical systems
  • Proven experience of a range of development lifecycles (e.g. Agile, Waterfall)
  • In depth understanding of design and modelling techniques (e.g. SysML/UML)
  • In depth knowledge of a variety of system architectures including multi-tier client-server architecture and service based architectures.
  • Significant experience of designing in accordance with existing standards, protocols and interfaces.
  • In depth understanding of estimating techniques (e.g. Cost, Effort, Risk).

Technology

  • A broad familiarity with a range of software technologies, including
  • Knowledge of operating systems (e.g. Windows, Linux)
  • Knowledge of XML and related technologies
  • Knowledge of various database approaches (e.g. SQL, NoSQL)
  • Understanding of Open Source licensing issues
  • Ability to identify and introduce disruptive technologies into solutions.

Domain Knowledge (desirable but not essential)

  • Experience of Ground Segments for institutional or commercial satellites.
  • Direct experience of ESA Ground Control Systems software is an advantage
  • Ground Control Systems covering control, planning, automation, simulation or archiving
  • Ground Mission Systems covering payload data processing, instrument planning or archiving
  • Assembly, Integration and Testing
Requirements
  • From time to time you will be asked to work on customer sites throughout the UK, Europe and outside the EU, which requires a willingness to travel and work onsite.
  • You must be able to obtain the required security clearances.
  • You must be eligible to work in the UK.
